Chance the Rapper is giving schoolchildren from his hometown a chance at a better education. The Chi-town Grammy winner announced on Monday that he will be donating $1 million to Chicago Public Schools, which is facing a budget crisis.

Chance the Rapper, who made history with his wins at the 2017 Grammys for his streaming-only album “Coloring Book,” is calling the donation a “call to action” for business and philanthropic leaders.

The generous gesture comes on the heels of a highly-publicized meeting with Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner, who previously vetoed legislation in December that would have sent the school district $215 million.

“Governor Rauner still won’t commit to give Chicago’s kids a chance without caveats or ultimatums,” said Chance in his announcement at Westcott Elementary School on the city’s South Side, not far from the neighborhood he grew up in. “Governor Rauner, do your job.”

The outspoken, forward-thinking hip hop star (real name Chancelor Bennet) has criticized government and politicians in the past, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, even though Chance’s father has worked for Emanuel at City Hall.

I would love to be a fly on the wall at the next family dinner.
