The two biggest music stories this week were U2’s Joshua Tree tour playing two sold-out shows at the historic Rose Bowl in Los Angeles and the death of singer Chris Cornell so it’s no surprise that the two converged over this past weekend.

The Irish band’s retrospective 30th anniversary album tour features the landmark The Joshua Tree being played front-to-back, and book-ended by an introductory set of fan favorites and a lengthy encore complete with Bono’s trademark running commentary and impromptu a cappellas, including “City of Stars” from La La Land (during “Beautiful Day”).
U2 also honored Cornell, the late Soundgarden singer who died of an apparent suicide after playing a concert in Detroit earlier in the week.
“For the lion that was Chris Cornell, tonight we send a prayer to his lioness, to Vicky,” said Bono, who dedicated “Running to Stand Still” to the fellow ’90s rock star. Watch it below:
U2 also played Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” over the loud speaker prior to the concert’s start.
