A now removed post on the official No Man’s Sky website has revealed that the game’s 1.3 update will bring with it a brand new central storyline, along with seemingly announcing a new multiplayer mode referred to as “joint exploration.”
The post was quickly taken down from the No Man’s Sky site, but not before it revealed some key information pertaining to the update, apparently titled ‘Atlas Rises.’ The description of the update is as follows:
“Introducing Update 1.3 Update 1.3, Atlas Rises, brings a brand new and overhauled central storyline, portals, a new procedural mission system, trade improvements, system economies, joint exploration and more. This update marks the one year anniversary of No Man’s Sky, and a lot has changed. Please see Pathfinder and Foundation for previous major updates.”

As revealed by r/NoMansSky, more information was posted to the subreddit’s Discord, outlining updated combat, interstellar trading and “Galactic Regeneration,” among other things:

No Man’s Sky disappointed the vast majority of its audience upon launch, with a number of features Hello Games had discussed prior to the game’s release not being included in the final product. However, since launch the developer has been working to make improvements to the game, and 1.3 looks set to the biggest update yet.
Though true multiplayer was never announced for No Man’s Sky, creator Sean Murray did state that players would be able to meet one another in-game, though given the size of its procedural universe the chances of such a meeting occurring were highly unlikely. However, shortly following the game’s launch it was revealed that this feature had not been included, disappointing many. Though the mention of “joint exploration” doesn’t give us much insight into what Hello Games has up its sleeve, it does suggest that some form of co-operative multiplayer will make its way into the game. The update is set to go live this week, though no solid release time has been announced.
