Earlier this week, “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat introduced Jenna-Louise Coleman as The Doctor’s next companion, following the upcoming departure of Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond and Arthur Darvill’s Rory Williams during the seventh season later this year.
And while Moffat and Coleman were coy about revealing the name of the new companion, Moffat did say that “how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.”
BBC has released the first photo of Coleman in costume in front of the Doctor’s TARDIS. And if you’re wondering about that sweater she’s wearing, keep in mind that her first appearance will come in the 2012 “Doctor Who” Christmas special.
More details about Coleman’s character are expected to be announced at this weekend’s Official Doctor Who Convention in Cardiff. In the meantime, it’s been confirmed that “Doctor Who” season seven will be split in two, with six episodes (including the Christmas special) airing this year and eight episodes coming in 2013, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the franchise.
Amy and Rory will make their final appearances in the fifth episode of the season, and the Daleks and the Weeping Angels both factor into the first half of the season.
