After the first season of “The Walking Dead,” the popularity of Daryl Dixon helped boost Norman Reedus from recurring status to one of the leading performers on the show. Now after the second season, history has repeated itself.
TVLine is reporting that Lauren Cohan has been bumped up to the main cast of “The Walking Dead” season 3; which should mean an increased role for Cohan’s Maggie Green next season as well as Cohan’s name in the opening credits.
Prior to landing her part on “The Walking Dead,” Cohan was best known for playing Bela Talbot on “Supernatural” and Rose on “The Vampire Diaries,” where Cohan recently returned to reprise her role. Cohan has also starred in “Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj,” “Young Alexander The Great” and “Death Race 2” in addition to her guest stints on “Chuck,” “Cold Case,” “CSI: New York” and “Modern Family.”
Of course, Cohan’s new status on the show doesn’t necessarily mean that Maggie or her boyfriend, Glenn (Steven Yuen) are safe. “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman has shown a willingness to veer from the comic book storyline and two main cast members were both killed off in the final episodes of season two.
Two additions to “The Walking Dead” season three cast have already been announced. Danai Gurira (“Treme”) will play the fan favorite character Michonne while David Morrissey (“Doctor Who”) will portray The Governor; one of the most infamous adversaries of the original comic book series.
“The Walking Dead” will return to AMC in October 2012.
