Rapper No-Shows Killing Hip-Hop In Australia As Urban Vibe Cancelled

Last weekend’s Urban Vibe festival produced another hip-hop no-show on Australian soil as American rappers J-Kwon and Soulja Boy joined the likes of Nas, 50 Cent and T.I to withdraw at the last minute from a major event in 2013.

The on-the-day cancellation of Urban Vibe becomes easily the worst of this year’s missing in action hip-hop performances after setbacks caused Nas’ curated Movement Festival, also featuring Chiddy Bang, to cancel a week before its national tour in April while the 50 Cent led Supafest (also featuring T.I and Akon) postponed its tour until November one week later.

Urban Vibe was supposed to represent a unique hip-hop event, bringing world famous acts to the regional Victorian town of Mildura. A few people turned up on Saturday, but the majority had left by midday after it was learnt the big name acts would not be appearing.

New Zealand’s Scribe was another high profile absentee, but the 34-year-old blamed the disaster on a “dodgy promoter”.

Scribe wrote on Facebook, “The reason I didn’t come is because the promoter sent me my flight 3 hours before departure which I was asleep and its weird coz he had paid me the day before as I have a strict “pay before play” policy or as I like to call it “no doe no show” so im a few g’s up for no work but I feel for the fans who bought tickets for a show that didnt happen. However that is one dodgy promoters doing not mine.”

It has not yet been determined whether ticket holder will receive a full refund.

It hasn’t been the only cancellation of the J-Kwon/Soulja Boy tour- Soulja Boy pulled on the day of last Thursday’s gig in the music-starved city of Darwin, citing “circumstances beyond [their] control”.
