Amazon are reportedly developing an Android based console, with designs on releasing it before the end of 2013.
The as-yet-unnamed console would likely be launched prior to North America’s Black Friday sales, and will follow in a path similar to the ill-fated Ouya, albeit with much more cash pumped into given that it’ll be born from the bursting wallet of Amazon. No Kickstarter projects here, folks!
The release of the Amazon console isn’t exactly going to trouble the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, but those behind the Ouya are likely not best pleased with this news. While the Ouya’s sales have been “better than expected” according to its CEO, reviews of it and its launch software haven’t exactly been strong.
A company as mighty as Amazon making a bid for the same market as the Ouya will likely destroy its chances of gaining any traction, which is a shame. Though I had no interest in buying a Ouya at launch, games such as TowerFall and Amazing Frog certainly had me interested in what indie developers could bring to the console in future. If Amazon uses their financial clout to push the Ouya out of the picture, we could see the console die before it ever really had the chance to breathe.
