New Zealand chart topping sensation Lorde finally ended a publishing bidding war by signing with Songs Music Publishing in what is reported to be a multi-million dollar deal.
Billboard reports the 17-year-old Lorde signed a publishing deal worth $2.5 million on her recent 17th birthday after attracting at least six major publishers, each seeking her lucrative signature.
Her single ‘Royals’ lasted six weeks in the number one spot on the US charts; making her the longest tenured female to hold the position while her debut album, Pure Heroine, became the second fastest selling album of the year and launched at No.1 on the Australian ARIA Chart.
Lorde passed on the likes of Sony/ATV, Universal Music Publishing Group, Kobalt, and Spirit and ensures SMP the worldwide rights to her debut EP, Love Club, the No.1 album and all future releases.
She joins SMP’s list of artists including Pharrell, Nelly, and Bright Eye’s Conor Oberst.
Song Music is rumoured to want Lorde to collaborate with artists including Diplo and The Weeknd, and possibly write for other artists.
“She’s gonna be a really big songwriter outside of Lorde,” SMP president Ron Perry said. “She’s going to have a lot of big songs out there as Ella (Yelich-O’Connor, her full name)… she’s a once-in-a-generation type artist.”
Lorde was recently announced as part of Time magazine’s Most Influential Teens of 2013 list along with golfer Lydia Ko.
