Rains be damned, SXSW 2014 ended on a high note on Saturday as Phantogram conquered the same rooftop stage that Soundgarden dominated the night before, and Green Day alter-ego Foxboro Hot Tubs retro-punked their way through an explosively high-energy performance at Rachael Ray’s annual Feedback party and concert at Stubb’s.
After The Wild Feathers broke hearts as we tasted some complimentary Ball Park action courtesy of the Rachael Ray experience, we made our way inside to watch the criminally underrated side project tear Austin a new one. Wearing influences as diverse as The Stooges, The Hives and The Beach Boys on their sleeves, the Foxboro Hot Tubs sound is anything but the ordinary Green Day fare. Pulling largely from their 2008 album Stop, Drop and Roll, the band took the stage after capacity-crowd performances by Blondie and Bob Schneider of the B-52a. a ‘50s teen-rebel romanticism rages through the material sounding like The Hives hit the pipe and went back in time to kick the shit out of Elvis.
Blasting, bouncy sugarpop nodded to The Kinks (particularly with “Alligator”s clear shades of “You Really Got Me”) as wild-eyed frontman Billie Joe Armstrong rampaged the stage in a flowered top-hat. He showered the packed room with silly string, beer, water and whatever else he could find throughout the 14-song set, which included a cover of the Network’s “Supermodel Robots” and Green Day’s “Makeout Party” and “Fuck Time,” as well as a show-ending run through The Who’s mini-opera “A Quick One (While He’s Away)”.
