A football fan has died after staying up late for three nights straight to watch the World Cup 2014.
39-year-old Zhou Meng, from Shanghai, China, died from a brain haemorrhage after exhausting himself by refusing to stop watching the tournament in Brazil.
The matches in the group stages of the World Cup typically take place between 3am – 6am in China due to the time difference, and a spokesperson for the hospital in which Meng was treated has stated that those who suffer with high blood pressure can have haemorrhage’s triggered by emotional or exciting events. Meng died while watching Costa Rica’s shocking 3-1 victory over Uruguay on Saturday (June 14th).
The combination of exhaustion and excitement is believed to have led to Meng’s death, and the staff at Shanghai No. 10 People’s Hospital have warned Chinese football fans to not exhaust themselves by watching the matches.
