PS4 is the Second Fastest-Selling Console Ever in the UK, But Trails Behind the Wii

The PS4 has raked in huge numbers in the UK, but has still struggled to topple the might of Nintendo’s Wii.

Sony’s latest console has passed the 1 million mark in the region, doing so after 42 weeks on sale. In comparison, the Wii managed to do the same in 38 weeks, though as the PS4 is the leading system of this console generation those numbers are nothing to be balked at.

It’s a massive achievement for Sony, especially considering that the console hasn’t had much in the way of exclusive titles since it launched. One can only imagine how many more units it could have shifted if its line-up didn’t consist of third-party titles, InFamous: Last Light and Knack.

The numbers were revealed by Sony UK boss Fergal Gara to MCV, who said:

“We have certainly seen PS3 consumers come across quite hard and fast, but a very significant proportion are people we have never seen on our network before. And from their behaviour and the types of games they are playing, it’s fairly clear that a big chunk of those have come across from Xbox, which is tremendous to see. And there’s a chunk that look like they’re brand new to gaming. And they’ve picked PS4 as their first serious gaming device.

“I would really like to thank all of our retail partners who have backed us so far. The work they have put in and the execution through the launch was exceptional, and without which we would not have got off the ground. We continue to work very well together and our plans for this Christmas are coming together quite nicely.”

As Destiny is launching this week (September 9th) we can only imagine that the sales of the console will continue to skyrocket, as its aggressive marketing continues to pitch it as a game directly tailored to Sony’s console despite it also releasing on the Xbox One. Speaking of the Xbox One, thus far Microsoft’s new console has only shifted 1.2 million units in the whole of Europe, compared to around 3.8 million for the PS4.
