It’s no secret that the broadcast networks have been recently binging on film-to-TV adaptations in the vain hope of landing a pre-packaged hit series during the current development season. There’s a definite sense of desperation in the air. And now NBC has picked yet another movie to get the television treatment.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC is developing “Frequency” as a TV series with Toby Emmerich (the writer of the original Frequency film in 2000) attached as an executive producer. The “Frequency” TV series will be written by Jeremy Carver, the current showrunner of “Supernatural” on The CW. Carver previously worked on Syfy’s “Being Human” remake and the Fearless feature film.
During the original Frequency, the story revolved around a man in the present (as played by future “Person of Interest” star, Jim Caviezel) who discovered a way to communicate with his father (Dennis Quaid) 30 years in the past. The resulting events allowed the father and son to team up and stop a serial killer from destroying their family.
The problem inherent with “Frequency” is that the story had a very finite shelf life in the film itself. Unless the potential “Frequency” TV series is going to drag out the arc of the father and son attempting to fix the past and save their loved ones then it’s hard to see how a television show can replicate that experience.
Whether “Frequency” gets a pilot episode or a series pick up remains to be seen. Maybe someone 30 years in the future should drop us a line via a telepathic podcast and let us know how it’s all gonna turn out.
