Jian Ghomeshi surrendered to police this morning and has been charged with four counts of sexual assault, numerous news outlets are reporting.
The former CBC host of the show “Q” was fired from the network last month, for which he sued the network for $55 million and published the following statement on his Facebook page:
“Today I was fired from the company where I’ve been working for almost 14 years – stripped from my show, barred from the building and separated from my colleagues. I was given the choice to walk away quietly and to publicly suggest that this was my decision. But I am not going to do that. Because that would be untrue. Because I’ve been fired. And because I’ve done nothing wrong…”
The lawsuit against the CBC has since been dropped and now Ghomeshi must pay the legal fees of the network. A number of well-known women have come forward with allegations, including actress Lucy DeCoutere of “Trailer Park Boys.” Nine women in total have filed complaints against Ghomeshi, and the Toronto Police say he now faces five criminal charges, including sexual assault and choking.
Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair addressed the media, and while he encouraged anyone with further info to reach out, he would not disclose much. “I have no additional information other than what was released by the office this morning,” he told reporters (CBC News). “All matters will be dealt with before the court…. I want to offer [any other possible victims] my assurance that they will be treated with dignity and respect.”
