‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Scores a WGA Award Nomination

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards nominations have just been announced, and surprise, surprise! Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy earned a coveted nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The WGA hasn’t completely shied away from comic book movies in the past – although American Splendor, based on the comics by Harvey Pekar, is the only winner to date – but it is only the third superhero movie to earn a nomination, after The Dark Knight in 2009 and Superman in 1979.

The WGA nominations are a decent look into the mind of Academy voters, but not necessarily accurate predictors. The Writers Guild only nominates actual guild members, whereas the Oscars open the playing field to non-member nominations as well. Also, the WGA nominated Damien Chazelle’s screenplay for Whiplash in the Original Screenplay category, even though the Oscars ruled that it qualified as an Adapted Screenplay.

You can see the complete list of motion picture nominations below, and be sure to check out our interviews with nominees James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), Graham Moore (The Imitation Game), and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), who appeared on a very special hour-long episode of our B-Movies Podcast.
