In its 29 year history, there has never been a live action adaptation of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda franchise. But that may be about to change.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Netflix is developing The Legend of Zelda as a live action series as “‘Game of Thrones’ for a family audience.” It would supposedly follow the Zelda template by following a young boy named Link who is tasked with rescuing Princess Zelda from Ganondorf and saving the fantasy realm of Hyrule from evil.
The report claims that Netflix and Nintendo are working closely together on this potential adaptation, but there is no writer currently attached to the project. The only previous adaptation of The Legend of Zelda was an animated series that ran for 13 episodes in 1989.

Several media outlets are picking up this story as a confirmed scoop. However, the original report cautions that the “Zelda” series is still in the very early stages of development and that it’s “possible that Netflix or Nintendo will kill the project before it gets off the ground.”
Neither Nintendo or Netflix responded to requests for comment from The Wall Street Journal. If the potential “Zelda” series was close to happening, it’s likely that both companies would have made a joint statement.
