Quebec’s Denis Villeneuve Will Compete For Palme d’Or At Cannes Film Festival

Canada’s golden film boy, Quebec’s Denis Villeneuve, will be the only Canadian competing at this year’s Cannes Film Festival – organizers announced the official line-up this morning from Paris, and the filmmaker’s latest project, Sicario, is up for the Palme d’Or.

Sicario stars Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Emily Blunt in a story about the CIA trying to take down a major drug ring and drug lord in Mexico. The flick is one of 16 titles up for the Palme d’Or – other entries competing include: The Sea of Trees from Gus Van Sant (starring  Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts), Carol from Todd Haynes (with Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kyle Chandler), and Louder Than Bombs from Joachim Trier (starring Rachel Brosnahan, Jesse Eisenberg and Amy Ryan).

A full listing of the official competitors can be found here. This year, winners will be chosen by a jury that is led by dynamic directing brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. It will also be the first time that the fest opens with a female-directed film (Emmanuelle Bercot’s drama La Tete Haute).

The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 13-24.
