A change.org petition that claims Australian rapper Iggy Azalea’s taking out of the Best Rap Song gong at last week’s 2015 Billboard Music Awards was given under dubious circumstances and should be taken back, has gained traction since being created, with over 20,000 signatures already received.
The petition, started by Christian Ferguson from Tennessee, claims that Iggy’s song Fancy is ineligible to win the award, as it falls outside the period of release for the 2015 cycle, which he claims is March 10, 2014 to March 2015.
“‘Fancy’ was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting. This is unfair to the other nominees in these category, especially to “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would’ve won. Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without “Fancy” as a nominee.”
Despite currently having 21,000 signatures however, it seems the petition will most likely be in vein, with a spokesperson from Dick Clark Productions, the company who runs the Billboard Awards, releasing a statement that the awards are not restricted to when a song is released, but when it is most popular, as the awards reflect the Billboard charts which follow sales and streams.
It appears that the bulk of signees and the creator himself, are mostly supporters of Nicki Minaj and feel that she was robbed, with a majority of comments on the petition going along the lines of “NICKI SLAYS and egghead lasagne does not.” and “#TEAMNICKI”.
Nice try Minaj fans, but looks like this time, Iggy is winning again.
