Quentin Tarantino clearly holds Sergio Leone’s classic spaghetti westerns close to his heart. In terms of the bold, wonderful, illogical, sumptuously visual and markedly European storytelling, Tarantino imitates with the best of them. His Django Unchained was an homage to all Italian westerns, although the Franco Nero Django films were clearly at the center of that worship. Tarantino’s next film, also a western, is called The Hateful Eight, and is set to be released on the 6th of January, 2016. In a coup, announced from Hall H at this year’s Comic-Con, Tarantino announced that the legendary Italian composer, Ennio Morricone, will be scoring The Hateful Eight, making the Leone connections even stronger.

Morricone, 86, has been working in movies since the 1950s, and has over 500 credits to his name. His most iconic score is probably for The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. He mainly works on Italian productions, although Tarantino has been using snippets of his scores for the last few years; Morricone is credited on Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained. He has been nominated for five Academy Awards. He’s kind of a big deal. It’s likely Tarantino has asked several times in the past, and finally wore him down to score one of his movies. The Hateful Eight, then, will sound epic. We look forward to it.
