Song Premiere: Sex BBQ’s Ode to Courtney Stodden Arrives

Crave’s latest premiere comes from Sex BBQ‘s forthcoming debut LP, Sex Noir City, due out Aug. 25 (pre-order). “Courtney Stodden” is a tongue-in-cheek ode to the cartoonishly vapid and obnoxious who married 50-year-old Green Mile actor Doug Hutchison in 2011 and who recently made a scene at San Diego’s Comic-Con wearing nothing but body paint.

“Kate and I wrote this song together in my living room,” shares keyboardist/singer Laura Palmer. “It’s a call-and-response song between famous 16-year-old bride Courtney Stodden and her 51-year-old husband, actor Doug Hutchenson. I was fascinated with her self-involved Twitter antics where she constantly posts pictures of herself being bizarrely sexual in a pumpkin patch or dressed in a Baywatch bathing suit or whatever. She also has these videos her parents made of her in baby socks tap dancing seductively in a way that makes you want to call children’s protective services. The song is about them having to kill her parents so they can be together. The phrase “I have feelings, I am feeling old” is from Doug’s perspective, and it’s kind of an “I would do anything to be with you” sort of love song.”

“Sex BBQ likes to highlight absurdities in pop culture,” offers singer/guitarist Kate Jan. “Courtney Stodden, in life and in this song, is absurd. This song is not really a parody, but it’s our musical representation of their bizarre relationship and the societal norms and nuances it exposes.”
