Destiny: The Taken King Won’t Launch with a Raid

Destiny‘s The Taken King expansion pack won’t feature its raid on launch day, developer Bungie revealed at PAX Prime.

Speaking to IGN, the game’s director Luke Smith said: “Its not going to be available on day one. We definitely have a plan for when it’s going to be available. I’m not going to announce the plan for it on the youtube gaming stage.

“But I promise for people who are excited about the raid will know when it’s time to take time off work. We’ll give em’ a heads up.”

Destiny‘s raids are widely considered to be the game’s best feature, and Bungie have promised that The Taken King‘s will be the best one yet. The raid will task players with taking on Oryx, the leader of the Taken, who is trying to avenge the death of his son Crota, who players defeated in Crota’s End.

This news will likely disappoint players who were hoping to sink their teeth into the new raid on day one, but it’s hardly a hugely surprising announcement. Vanilla Destiny didn’t launch with a raid either, and considering Destiny‘s MMO leanings, Bungie likely wants its players to start acquiring new gear in The Taken King‘s other modes before they get to take on its greatest challenge. There are plenty of reasons to criticize Bungie regarding its handling of the expansion – which we have done so many times before – but this isn’t one of them.
