VIDEO: Wayne Rooney Delivers Speech to Teammates After Becoming England’s All-Time Top Goalscorer

Wayne Rooney delivered a tearful speech in the changing room after scoring his 50th goal for England, making him the all-time top goalscorer for the country’s national team.

Rooney broke the record after scoring a late penalty against Switzerland on Tuesday evening, breaking a record that was previously held by Sir Bobby Charlton and had stood for 45 years.

While Rooney’s England career has hardly been illustrious, 50 goals is still a record-breaking milestone that the captain addressed in a post-match speech in front of his teammates, in which he thanked them, his family and the England fans, along with saying that he hopes that one day a youngster in the current England squad overtakes his accomplishment.

England coach Roy Hodgson called for Rooney to deliver the speech as he entered the changing room, where he was met by a round of applause from his teammates and the national side’s staff.

Watch the speech below:

Rooney scored his 50th goal whilst earning his 107th cap for England. His first goal was against Macedonia in 2003, shortly after he had debuted in the squad as a 17-year-old.
