Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez’s horror comic, Locke & Key was an immediate hit when it was first published by IDW in 2008. But while Locke & Key built up a following as a comic, adapting it for Hollywood has proven tricky. A TV pilot was made for Fox in 2011, but the Locke & Key series was not ordered by the network. A potential Locke & Key movie trilogy also fell through within the past few months.
While a live-action adaptation could still come, Audible has taken Locke & Key and turned it into a 13-hour full-cast audio drama with over 50 actors, including Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense), and Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager), with cameo roles for Hill and Rodriguez, and even Stephen King, who just so happens to be Hill’s father.
The story of Locke & Key revolves around the Locke family, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode as they deal with their father’s murder by moving into the family’s ancestral home, Keyhouse. Inside Keyhouse, the Locke children discover keys that can unlock other worlds, or the memories of another person. One key can change gender while another key can turn a person into a ghost by expelling them from their own bodies. But the Locke family is endangered by Dodge, a malevolent entity who seeks the most powerful key of them all: Omega Key, and he/she doesn’t care who has to die to accomplish this!
