Tom Hanks’ support of Aston Villa may not have helped the club avoid relegation this year, but the Hollywood actor’s magic touch may have helped underdogs Leicester City in their unlikely ascension to the top of the Premier League.
Speaking during the red carpet event for the premiere of his new movie A Hologram for the King, Hanks was questioned about his thoughts on Villa’s resignation, with him claiming that while he was sad to see the Midlands club move down to the Championship, he had put on a significant bet at the start of the season that would be sure to keep his spirits high. Speaking in a short interview during the premiere, Hanks said: “You know what I did at the start of this season? Put £100 on Leicester, so I think I’ll do okay.”
Considering Leicester were predicted to be relegated before the season began, the inexplicably high odds on the club winning the league would mean that if Leicester manages to secure the top spot, which is all but confirmed at this stage, Tom Hanks would bag himself around £500,000. Even to an actor as famous as Hanks, whose net worth is around $350 million, this is still a relatively significant amount of winnings.
