In the ’70s, Marvel introduced readers to Luke Cage, a blacksploitation style superpowered character who was the original Hero for Hire and uncommonly selfish for a hero. But the ’70s are long over, and the modern version of Luke Cage is one of the most prominent superheroes in the Marvel Universe. Last year, Mike Colter brought Cage to the MCU in the Jessica Jones series, and in 2017, he’ll be one of The Defenders. But first, he’s about to star in a brand new Luke Cage solo series on Netflix!
Earlier this morning, Netflix released a new extended trailer for Luke Cage, which reunited Colter’s title character with Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple after their encounter in the first season finale of Jessica Jones. They are clearly getting closer to each other in this series, as Cage finds himself reluctantly drawn into the war for Harlem’s soul. This trailer also offers up an intriguing glimpse of Cage’s updated villains: Mahershala Ali as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, and Theo Rossi as “Shades” Alvarez. Their comic book counterparts weren’t very formidable compared to Cage, but that’s definitely changing in this series.
The trailer also introduces Simone Missick’s Misty Knight, a popular Marvel heroine who is also making her live-action debut in this series. She also has one of the most biting remarks for Cage: “You might be bulletproof, but Harlem ain’t!”

All 13 episodes of Luke Cage will premiere on September 30, and Cage will return in 2017 as one of The Defenders, a team up miniseries that will unite Cage with Daredevil and Iron Fist, while reuniting him with Jessica Jones. And if Netflix continues to follow the MCU’s formula, we won’t be too shocked if Luke Cage and The Defenders get second season orders.
