Who would have thought that of all the iconic ’80s horror movie villains, Chucky would be the last man standing in 2017? To say the series is still “going strong” might be a bit of an overstatement as far as quality, but that depends on who you ask. But the fact of the matter remains: the Child’s Play films are the last in a long line of nightmare-inducing slashers from your childhood that haven’t been rebooted yet. In fact, Don Mancini — the creator of the franchise — has not only written every one of the movies (six at this point), but directed a few as well. That trend continues with this year’s release of Cult of Chucky, which you can watch a teaser trailer for below.
Curse of Chucky Will Bring The Child’s Play Series Back To Its Roots
It may be lacking in terms of new footage (it contains none), but the teaser certainly hits its mark when it comes to drumming up those old nostalgic feels of dread. However, the video’s YouTube description gives you exactly what the tease is missing. Namely, details:
Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all. Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now-grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar®-nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.
Looks like original protagonist Andy Barclay’s post-credits cameo in the most recent Curse of Chucky wasn’t just a one-off deal. He joins the series new star Nica — the real-life daughter of Brad Dourif, voice of Chucky in all seven films– in what could be a final standoff against the infamous Good Guy doll. But is it enough to bring fans of the original back? Regardless, Cult of Chucky began filming Tuesday in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with both stars aching (freezing?) to get back to work.
Sorry, Jack, but Chucky is indeed back…again.
