The New ‘Alien: Covenant’ Trailer Promises 100% More Love

The Alien movies have explored bizarre planets, creepy prisons, slimy genetic laboratories and even pyramids underneath the Antarctic tundras. But they’ve never really delved too deeply into romance… until Alien: Covenant, apparently.

There were some awkward subplots in the Alien vs. Predator movies and some ill-fated flirting from Ellen Ripley, but the majority of the films in this influential sci-fi franchise have focused on bureaucracy, isolation and the terrors of the human (and inhuman) body. Which made a lot of sense, since they were films about getting killed by extraterrestrial monsters, and not about getting it on.

Alien: Covenant, however, seems to be very specifically about getting it. As we learn in this brand new trailer, the protagonists of this Alien interquel (a prequel to Alien but a sequel to Prometheus) are all romantically linked to one another. They are traveling to an all-new planet with the specific purpose of populating the world with their offspring. And of course it all goes pretty danged pear-shaped pretty danged quickly, thanks to those darned xenomorphs.

This may indeed be a smart move for the Alien franchise. Many of the films in this series are about characters with relatively thin emotional connections to one another, so when their lives are threatened, many of the protagonists are more concerned for their own lives than the lives of the fallen. This new idea could inject a healthy dose of humanity into a series that, when last we visited it in Prometheus, had skewed rather academic.

Will the gamble pay off? We’ll find out on May 19, 2017. Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz and Jussie Smollett, and it looks like they’re going to get snuggly before they get dead.
