Interview | John Knoll and the Worlds of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’

In anticipation of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hitting Blu-ray on April 4th, Industrial Light and Magic invited us to come and talk to a bunch of the amazing people who have helped bring the worlds we so love to life. One of the more exciting people we got a chance to sit down with was John Knoll who was the Visual Effects Supervisor on the film and has not only been working on Star Wars for a long time, but has also been a fan from the very beginning. He also worked on Star Trek: the Next Generation , putting him in a special position in the hearts of scifi geeks the world over. (You may also be in awe of John for inventing Adobe Photoshop!)

John Knoll shared a ton of insight about the unique challenges Rogue One: A Star Wars Story faced in bringing some of the new environments and elements to life, as well as the pleasures of getting a chance to revisit some very legendary locations from Star Wars lore. He offered a really fun perspective of how hard it can be to do something as simple as a ship’s interior or as challenging as a U-wing fight.

Speaking with Knoll was highlighted by a presentation in another part of ILM that gave us a chance to see how director Gareth Edwards was able to bring some of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ’s most epic battle scenes to their stunning realization. It truly gives the Star Wars fan an appreciation of the artistry that has to work in tandem to create such an amazing final product.

There appears to have been no end to the innovation that goes into these movies, with the team behind Star Wars always striving to rise to the occasion to bring stories told a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away a little closer to home.
