Fox Officially Renews ‘The X-Files’ For a New Season

Last year, Fox brought back The X-Files for an extremely short revival miniseries that left the fate of Fox Mulder up in the air. In fact, the entire world seemed to be on the verge of a major extraterrestrial event…that will probably be walked back. Because now, we’re going to get a resolution to that cliffhanger when The X-Files makes its second return to Fox.

Via Deadline, The X-Files has been renewed for a ten episode run on Fox, that will premiere some time during the 2017-2018 TV season. The launch date has not been set, but both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be back as their iconic characters: Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Production of the new season is expected to begin later this summer.

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide,” said Fox Broadcasting Company Prez David Madden in a statement. “Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

The X-Files ran for nine seasons on Fox before coming to an end in 2002. For years, series creator, Chris Carter, teased a third X-Files movie that would deal with the lingering threat of alien colonization. But that plotline was barely addressed in the revival series, and it was critically slammed for its uneven tone and poor storytelling. After that short run, it’s unclear if the new episodes will receive an enthusiastic welcome from either critics or fans. The truth is out there, but it’s never in the show itself.
