Mike Mignola Draws the Poster For the New ‘Hellboy’ Movie

It’s been nearly a decade since Hellboy 2 came and went in theaters. Perhaps it was a bad idea to open the film a week before The Dark Knight, since that Batman sequel helped push Hellboy’s second cinematic adventure several spots downward the following weekend. Consequently, Hellboy 3 never came to pass. But there’s a new Hellboy movie on the way, and it may be coming much sooner than expected.

IGN has debuted the first promotional poster for the Hellboy reboot film, which was spotted earlier today at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival in France. Because the new film hasn’t started production yet, it features an image of the title character as drawn by Mike Mignola, the man who created the series over two decades ago. The poster also reveals the film’s title: Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.

But who is the Blood Queen? And for that matter, who is Hellboy? For those of you don’t read the comics or haven’t seen the two previous films, Hellboy is literally a demon from Hell who was summoned to Earth in the ’40s as a baby. Hellboy was raised by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and became a prominent member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Hellboy even earned “honorary human status” for his valor as the “world’s greatest paranormal investigator.”

As for the Blood Queen, IGN speculates that it will be the powerful British witch known as the Lady of the Lake, who previously appeared in the comics. David Harbour has been cast as the new Hellboy, which features a script by Mignola, Christopher Golden, and Andrew Cosby. Neil Marshall is attached to direct, and if the 2018 release is accurate, than Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen may begin production as soon as this year.
