Frank Miller’s ‘Sin City’ Is Coming To TV

Ten years after Frank Miller’s Sin City hit the big screen for the first time, the comic book series is getting a second chance in live-action as a television series.

Deadline broke the story that a Sin City TV show is currently in development at The Weinstein Company/Dimension, with former showrunner of The Walking Dead, Glen Mazzara attached as the showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Underworld helmer Len Wiseman is set to direct the pilot episode. While the two Robert Rodriguez directed films were fairly faithful to the source material, Deadline notes that the series will be “a far departure from the films, introducing original characters and timelines within the Sin City universe.”

Miller created the Sin City comic book series back in 1991, and used it as a platform for several dark and noirish storylines, several of which could still be adapted for the new television incarnation. But if we had to guess, the latest iteration of Sin City will borrow more of the mood and tone from the original rather than simply repeat the parts that were adapted for the two movies.

It should be noted that the second film, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, was a huge bomb in Hollywood and ended up losing a lot of money. So there is some risk in revisiting the franchise only three years after that fiasco. However, there is also the potential that the television series can recapture some of the excitement that the first movie generated, but only if the show can fully translate the comic to the screen. The project doesn’t currently have a home, but it would take a premium cable network like HBO, Showtime, or STARZ, to do the property justice. Although we suspect that Netflix would also be a promising place to bring the series.
