True Scary Story #4: Not An Urban Myth After All
This was a few years back, but I just found this sub and figured this story would fit in.
I grew up in a tiny town surrounded by lots of other tiny towns, when you date someone you pretty much have to seek relationships outside of your town, the towns were all connected by long dirt roads that had significantly overgrown trees and such. and I dated a girl about 3 towns over, getting to her house was about a 45 min drive of all back roads, mostly dirt.
One night in the late fall, driving home around 1 am or so I noticed a stopped car up the way with its hazards on, I turned my brights off so I didn’t accidentally blind someone sitting in their car making a phone call or something, and slowed down to go past them.
Well as I got closer I noticed there was something laying in the road beside the car and the driver car door was open, the second I saw that I stopped, but I was still pretty far back because I’ve heard of this situation and that you aren’t supposed to stop there.
I sat there contemplating what I should do, The guy was mostly blocking the road, to pass would run him over, going back and taking a different route would take me about 30 minutes out of the way. What if its someone actually in trouble.
I finally decided to flip my brights on to see if I could see someone hiding or something. And boy did that work.
Not only did I see someone else, I saw about 2 dozen someone else’s coming out from behind the trees on both sides of the road and the guy stood up in the middle of the road and just stared at me. There was about 30 seconds (that felt like an eternity) of what felt like intense eye contact before I unfroze and slammed my car into reverse and floored it, spun around and drove about 100mph down that dirt road and called the cops who thought I was crazy.
I avoided that road and opted for the 1 and a half hour long route home at night until that girl and I broke up 6 months later.
The moment of turning on the brights and seeing a group of people in the trees would be a classic horror moment if it happened in a movie. There are quite a few of similar true stories, unfortunately. But hopefully, people will still think about helping someone but still be clever like the man who told this story.
