Marvel TV Hints At New Comedies and Dramas in the Future

Last week, Marvel’s The Defenders wrapped up the first phase of its long term plans with Netflix. Marvel TV has had a great deal of critical success with the five Netflix dramas that have debuted to date, and less so with ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter. Marvel’s Inhumans will be premiering on ABC next month, but it’s far from the end of Marvel’s plans for the network.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Television’s Senior Vice President of Original Programming, Karim Zreik, made a few interesting comments regarding Marvel’s future plans at the Edinburgh TV Festival. For starters, Zreik revealed that ABC is developing  a new female-focused drama series that will be “Jessica Jones-esque.” What’s interesting there is that Jessica Jones began development as an ABC drama before it was moved over to Netflix.  Zreik added that Marvel is targeting different audiences, before adding that Daredevil drew in male viewers, Jessica Jones was popular with females, while Luke Cage had a mixture of the two. As for Iron Fist, Zreik noted that younger audiences found that series.

Zreik added that “Comedy is something we really want to go into. It took us time to dip our foot in the comedy pool.” Marvel does have a comedy series based on the New Warriors for Freeform, but it doesn’t currently have a comedy series attached to a network. Previously, Marvel had placed Damage Control in development as a comedy at ABC, but a pilot episode did not materialize.

While Marvel may find other properties to develop as comedies, Damage Control is still probably the best choice for that. However, Zreik noted that Marvel isn’t looking to do an office comedy like DC’s Powerless, which lasted a single season on NBC.
