For years, Amazon Prime Video has been working on an expensive new Lord of the Rings tv show. The streaming giant acquired the rights to the series for $250 million, which was personally negotiated by real-life supervillain Jeff Bezos himself. In part to a guaranteed 5-season commitment, the deal was estimated to be worth over $1 billion. You heard that right, Bezos spent over a billion dollars to fulfill his fantasy of playing Gollum in this one.
The series began filming in February 2020, but due in part to the ongoing pandemic, the first season cost a reported $465 million. Just for the record, that’s the most expensive season of television ever produced. Even though much is still unknown about the series, Bezos finally took to Twitter to reveal the title of the new show — Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. In typical Jeff Bezos fashion, he managed to do so in the most cringeworthy and clueless way possible:

The Rings of Power is set to premiere in September, with the title confirming that the series will indeed be a prequel. In fact, the show is set thousands of years before the movies. According to Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, “The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle Earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the dark lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the last alliance of Elves and Men.” We didn’t realize that Bezos was the real-life version of Sauron until now.
In addition, Amazon has also released a teaser trailer for The Rings of Power, which serves as a much better reveal for the title treatment. If anything, the series should have just been called The Rings of Bezos. No one asked for this documentary on the rise of Bezos — I mean Sauron.
