There are no rules in rock ‘n’ roll. Nowhere has this been more evident lately than an incident at a Rage Against the Machine concert where guitarist Tom Morello got tackled by the very security guards who were supposed to be keeping him safe.
It all went down on Saturday in Toronto. The band was on their Public Service Announcement North American tour and playing a show at the Scotiabank Arena. Somehow, during the group’s final song, “Killing in the Name,” a sneaky fan made his way onstage and then attempted to catapult into the crowd. Security guards stormed the stage to nab the fan, but instead accidentally tackled Morello. The 58-year-old guitarist fell into the pit as a result.
“Hold up! Hold up!” frontman Zack de la Rocha yelled as the performance came to a halt. Morello climbed his way back onstage and was met with applause from fans.
“Don’t try that shit,” de la Rocha warned everyone in the arena. “We’re cool, we love y’all… but don’t do that.”
Here’s video from the fracas.
We don’t know who the man was who rushed the stage nor why he felt the need to do so. Rage Against the Machine has been vocal about the overturning of Roe v. Wade and has incorporated messaging to that extent into their shows. Whether this incident is related to that is unclear. Maybe it was just another musichead who got too ramped up.
Go ahead and rage against the machine, guys, but please leave the band members alone.
