More details about how fitness guru Richard Simmons passed away have been revealed. Tom Estey, the Simmons family spokesperson, stated that Lenny, Richard’s brother, received a report from the LA Coroner’s office saying that his death was “accidental.” Simmons was found on July 13, 2024 by his housekeeper one day after a celebration for his 76th birthday, though the cause of his death required additional investigation at the time.
What was Richard Simmons’ cause of death?
The cause of death for Richard Simmons was “accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor,” according to a call made by the LA Coroner’s office to Lenny. This statement from Estey on the matter was provided to People on Wednesday, August 21.
Additionally, the toxicology report was “negative” apart from the medication that Richard had been prescribed. At the time of his passing, the Los Angeles Police Department stated that “there [was] no foul play.” The full coroner’s report is not yet available to the public.
After his death, reports surfaced, via TMZ, saying that Simmons had fallen in a bathroom at his home on Friday, July 12, and told his housekeeper that he would seek medical care the following day if necessary. This is despite the housekeeper reportedly imploring him to seek medical attention after he felt dizzy. Simmons was found unresponsive on the floor next to his bed on Saturday morning at around 10 am.
The statement from Estey continued: “The Family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”
Lenny previously shared on CNN that he wanted people to remember Richard’s positive spirit, stating “I don’t want people to be sad about my brother. I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives.”
Actor Pauly Shore is reportedly set to play Richard Simmons in an upcoming biopic.
