Microsoft has said that it will fight to block government access to Kinect user data, after the company’s image was dealt a blow following the recent PRISM revelations.
It was reported earlier this month that Microsoft had worked with the US government and National Security Agency (NSA) to allow the communications between its users to be intercepted.
But Microsoft has said that the Kinect and Xbox One won’t be used to spy on you, as a spokesperson for the company told The Verge: “Absent a new law, we don’t believe the government has the legal authority to compel us or any other company that makes products with cameras and microphones to start collecting voice and video data. We’d aggressively challenge in court any attempts to try and force us to do so.”
Microsoft previously explained that the new Kinect included with the Xbox One would not be able to listen in to your conversations and distribute them to another source, saying: “When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.”
Microsoft is currently attempting to reveal more information regarding the data they were requested to hand over to the NSA, but the US government is prohibiting them from doing so.
