CraveOnstage Interview: Dessa Strips Down Her Sound & Gets Candid

For September’s Band of The Month feature, we caught up with philosopher, rapper, storyteller, Doomtree member and poignantly beautiful soul Dessa on a beautiful morning in the Hollywood hills, for an intimate performance featuring several tracks off her excellent new album Parts of Speech as well as an interview session.

We kicked off our BOTM: Dessa feature with an intimate performance of her heartwrenching track “Call Off Your Ghost,” and followed up with a uniquely stripped-down rendition of “The Lamb”. Continuing the session series, we also brought you a reworked version of “The Man I Knew,” a poignant perspective on love through the lens of substance abuse, replete live guitar riffs provided by Dustin Kiel and the gorgeous harmonies between Dessa and her vocal partner Aby Wolf.

Today we deliver the penultimate installment of Dessa’s BOTM feature – a candid interview with Dessa and her live-act touring partners, vocalist Aby Wolf and guitarist Dustin Kiel. As Dessa explains her creative approach and why truth is one of the most important aspects of music to her (“Any lyric that sounds like it could be true, usually is”), Dustin discusses his techniques in adding guitar to the Dessa sound. Meanwhile, vocalist Aby Wolf explains her harmonic accompaniments and the intricate melodic designs she weaves alongside Dessa, and the “submarine sign language” they use in live performance to communicate.

Check back next Thursday for another exclusive Dessa performance! Get Parts of Speech and keep up with all things Dessa at her official site, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.
