Singer-songwriter and Swell Season notable Glen Hansard has outdone himself. His new EP, Drive All Night features a cover of the Springsteen’s classic of the same name from his legendary LP The River.
Nearly nine minutes in length, the song dutifully conveys its lyrical conviction as Hansard – backed by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder as well as Joe Henry and Jake Clemons (nephew of Clarence, Springsteen’s E Street Band’s departed sax man) – puts his heart on the line.
“I’d drive all night again just to buy you some shoes and taste your tender charm,” Hansard sings, “And I just wanna sleep tonight again in your arms…”
Hansard had a brush with The Boss at the Academy Awards in 2008, when he won Best Original Song with “Falling Slowly”. “I remember sitting next to Bruce Springsteen, and he put things in perspective for me so, so well,” Hansard told Rolling Stone last year. “He said, ‘When you have success, you need to mark it, even if it’s opening a beer or a bottle of champagne or going to dinner with your family or taking a holiday. If you don’t mark your success, then the day your ship comes in might just be another day at the office.’ And I remember thinking, ‘Jesus, that’s so true!'”
The EP is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.
