Microsoft Addresses Xbox One Disc Drive Problems, Affects “Very Small Number” of Owners

Reports of faulty Xbox One consoles have permeated the web since its launch last Friday. Now, Microsoft responds.

Microsoft said in an official statement that “The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers”. Having sold over one million units, even a fault rate of 1% would mean tens of thousands are already affected

A great deal of effort has gone into quality control for the Xbox One’s manufacturing process to prevent a widespread issue like that of the Xbox 360’s famous Red Ring of Death. Microsoft has created a very efficient console, but its disc drives are proving troublesome.

Speaking to the BBC, Microsoft said:

For launches over multiple countries the volume of manufacturing required by both Microsoft and Sony will always unfortunately yield a minor amount of hardware failures, in one form or another, and we are seeing this with this launch cycle,

The Xbox One’s adversary, the PS4, suffered launch issues a week prior. Problems with the HDMI port and hard drive led to thousands of outraged customers who couldn’t turn their console on.

If you’ve been affected by the Xbox One disc drive issue, your best course of action is to try and take advantage of the return policy at the retailer you purchased it from. Microsoft is replacing faulty Xbox One’s, but there is a 2-3 week wait for delivery. Your retailer may be able to help you immediately.
