It’s difficult to imagine the stoic Roy Keane having tear ducts, let alone using those tear ducts to shed a tear, but the football pundit has revealed that he cried when learning that former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson had fired him from the club.
In an ITV4 documentary, Keane revealed his thoughts on his sacking from United in 2005, after he had criticised a number of United players following their 4-1 defeat at Middlesborough. Since then, the bad blood between Keane and Ferguson has yet to be resolved, with Ferguson even devoting an entire page to Keane in his autobiography.
In the documentary, Keane said: “The manager said to me that we had come to the end. I had lost respect for him.
“I knew that was business. I drove back home. I was upset. I shed a few tears in my car outside the training ground for about two minutes. I could’ve played for United for another couple of years.
“There were no surprises [in Ferguson’s book]. Our relationship is non-existent. Nothing surprises me these days with that man.
“Control and power, that’s how he works. He is still striving for it now even though he isn’t the manager. There is a massive ego involved.”
Keane also said that the best manager he has played under was Brian Clough. When asked why he hadn’t picked Ferguson, Keane replied: “You asked me the question. I answered you.”
