The Ten Most Awesome Smiths Covers of All Time

I am a hardcore Smiths fan. Since my late teens, I have nursed an insatiable appetite for all things involving the masterful pop foursome from Manchester, and I am not alone in my devotion. The Smiths legacy has inspired not just legions of fans, but also musicians. Over the years, bands from all genres have covered Smiths songs. In fact, we here at Craveonline recently posted an interpretation of the Smith’s “This Charming Man” by the band Skream. Well, technically it was a butchering, not a cover. Skream may have turned a charming song into a wretched listen, but not every musician is guilty of such a musical offense. We saw the challenge, purged the great banks of the digital highway, and found Ten Most Awesome Smiths Covers.

Song: How Soon Is Now

Smiths Album: Meat Is Murder

Taken From: Dine Alone B Side

Post hardcore icons Quicksand beef up the guitars, and replace Morrissey’s vocals of woe and longing, with Walter’s sense of urgency and anger. Dig the awesome bass solo in the middle.

Song: A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours

Smiths Album: Strangeways Here We Come

Taken From: Live A/V Club Performance

While I’m not exactly a fan of Coheed & Cambria, they have been able to surprise me from time to time. Take this acoustic live performance of The Smiths’ “A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours”, which turns the song from campy to creepy, especially with Claudio Sanchez’s peculiar vocal style.

Song: Panic

Smiths Album: Louder Than Bombs

Taken From: The World Still Won’t Listen: A Tribute To The Smiths

Old school Oi! icons performing a Smiths’ classic. I’ve always wanted to start a soccer fight to this song. Now all my dreams really can come true.
