Titanfall to Have a Story Ending

You might know of Titanfall as one of the biggest games of 2014. You might also know it for having no single-player campaign to speak of. That doesn’t mean it won’t have a story, though.

Respawn senior map designer Mohammad Alavi has some great news for gamers who want to play Titanfall but wish it has a story. He told X-ONE during an interview:

Titanfall will most definitely have an ending. It’s not a story if it doesn’t have an ending, but there are multiple sides to that story.

So what is the story like? Alavi describes:

You and your party or enlisted into a faction, either IMC or Militia. You’ll play the campaign and progress through the narrative hitting the missions in order until you’ve beaten the game on that faction. You’ll then have the option to play through again from the beginning on the other faction. Once you’ve beaten the game from both sides, you’ll be able to play any mission on either faction you like.

This, in conjunction with how the game has been laid out with 6v6 maps peppered with A.I., gives the impression that Respawn is doing something very bold and new. This is exactly the kind of risk that shooter develops need to take to reinvigorate life into what has become an unnecessarily stale genre.

It was recently announced that A.I. characters in the game world will be “processed in the cloud“. It’s cool to think that we’ve arrived at the point where remote servers are controlling the CPU characters who are part of our story experience. The question is, will it be successful or promising enough for future development teams to offer the same functionality? I think so given the success of closed alpha.

Titanfall will release on March 11th for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.
