The gaming industry is littered with sequels. In fact, we’ve received so many video game sequels over the years that when a new IP flies onto our radar, we promptly ignore it because we’re so afraid of change. This is why original games aren’t so commonplace in today’s market, and why the top-selling titles typically belong to a series that receives annual releases.
With that being said, we’ve listed a selection of video games that should be left as they are, and should not receive a number 2 plonked onto the end of their titles in the coming years.
Here are 5 video game sequels we hope we never see.
5 Video Game Sequels We Hope We Never See
Gone Home 2
God, imagine if The Fullbright Company made a sequel to Gone Home ? Arguably 2013's most popular and heavily discussed indie game, in an alternative universe it was created by a major developer, and its surprising success led them to instantly start work on a sequel which placed players in the shoes of Samantha as she continued her journey of self-discovery. There would probably be a death in there somewhere, too, because the problem many had with Gone Home was that its finale was "too predictable" and that it should've featured a ghost, or a suicide, or some other plot device which would have thoroughly ruined its narrative.
Gone Home 2 would also have to feature more interaction than just picking up bits and pieces left around a house - it'd probably have to feature guns, too. And have multiplayer. And be called Call of Duty .
Journey 2
Journey 's finale was open-ended, and in the world of video games that usually means a sequel is on its way. Fortunately, it's unlikely developer Thatgamecompany would tarnish an already perfect experience by expanding upon it.
With that being said, if a Journey 2 did come to fruition, I'd like it to take the format of a high school reunion, where you'd meet up with all the players you met and traveled beside in the original game, complete with all the humble bragging that typically ensues: "I made it to the top of the mountain!" "Yeah, but I saved you from those worm/dragon things." "Well you never got a sweet ass white coat for collecting all those scalf pieces."
Ah, the memories.
Minecraft 2
Minecraft seems like one of those timeless games that will always have a huge following ploughing money into it and therefore will never have a sequel, but there's going to come a time when literally everyone in the world owns it and, aside from the odd DLC, the money stops being piled into Mojang's pockets. When this day comes, will we receive a Minecraft 2 ?
Hopefully not. Minecraft is as pure a gaming experience as you're likely to find, and if Mojang were to release a sequel to it, there's nothing they could possibly do that would improve upon what the game's dedicated modding community have already achieved. Besides, it'll continue to receive ports for a variety of different systems/devices presumably until the end of time, making Minecraft 2 firmly unnecessary.
Red Dead Redemption 2
While I would love to revisit the Old West setting for a third Red Dead game, I would not like to do so whilst playing as the embittered Jack Marston, John Marston's much more unlikeable son.
The tragic conclusion of Red Dead Redemption has been widely discussed, and while it was a great ending, it was in danger of being ruined by Rockstar forcing the player to continue experiencing the game's open-world in the shoes of the whiney, cynical Jack.
If Rockstar is to make a direct sequel to Red Dead Redemption that continues Jack's story, rather than a different game within the same setting as was the case with the transition from Red Dead Revolver to Redemption , then consider us less enthused. In summary:
Red Dead Redemption 2 = No
Red Dead [Insert Title Here] 3 = Yes
The Last Of Us 2
It's probably an inevitability that we'll see The Last Of Us 2 at some point in the PS4's life cycle. The original game was far too commercially and critically popular for Sony to not force another one out of Naughty Dog, and even though its conclusion definitely left the door open for a sequel, by taking out the mystery of what happens to Joel and Ellie next Naughty Dog may run the risk of sullying our memory of the original's ending, which stands as one of the most discussed in gaming history.
The Last Of Us ' 'Left Behind' DLC is releasing soon, and I personally hope that it will be the last we'll see of these characters. With that being said, if a The Last Of Us 2 were to be released I'd snap it up in a heartbeat, so perhaps I'm part of the problem.
