SXSW 2014: Soundgarden to Play ‘Superunknown’ in its Entirety at iTunes Festival

With Soundgarden in full nostalgia mode heading into the 20th anniversary of Superunknown, we’ve already got a Super Deluxe Edition reissue to look forward to. But music fans headed to Austin, TX for SXSW this year are in for a much more badass experience: the godfathers of grunge will perform their legendary 1994 LP in its entirety at this year’s South By Southwest conference.

For the first time ever, Superunknown will get the live performance treatment as part of the upcoming iTunes Festival at SXSW. Swarms of rock fans will descend upon Austin’s ACL Live at the Moody Theater on March 13 for the event, which will also include performances by Coldplay, Zedd, Imagine Dragons, Keith Urban and more. Performances will be live-streamed, and while the show is free, fans can sign up to win reserved tickets at the official SXSW site

Fans may be asking, with drummer Matt Cameron taking a break from the band: who’s going to be playing drums when Soundgarden takes the stage? Well, Mr. Cameron will be on the skins after all, apparently

The forthcoming Superunknown reissue, arriving on June 3, is an SG fan’s dream come true. The two-CD Deluxe Edition boasts a remastered version of the album alongside a second disc of 16 demos, rehearsals and B-sides. For the big collectors, the Super Deluxe Edition features five discs packed with even more rarities, B-sides, demos and rehearsals – as well as a version of the album mixed in Blu-ray Audio 5.1 Surround Sound. Accompanying it will be a hardbound book with liner notes by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke, never-before-seen photos by Kevin Westerberg and “reimagined” album art by artist Josh Graham.
