2014’s Top Video Game April Fools: Titanfall, SEGA, League of Legends, Guild Wars 2 and Path of Exile

It’s April Fools, and that means you probably shouldn’t believe everything you hear. Not only do gamers join in on the festivities, but video game developers like to use it to crack a good joke.

There have been a few noteworthy April Fools video game jokes tossed around today, and here are our favorites.

Titanfall – Optimus Prime DLC Trailer

Respawn Entertainment released a trailer which announced a fictional DLC package for Titanfall that adds Transformers to the universe. “Standby for Prime”. The DLC available first on Xbox One was a nice touch.

Guild Wars 2 – Big Heads

If you log into Guild Wars 2 today you’re in for a treat. Everyone is running around with massive heads. It’ll be rather difficult to take PvP seriously. ArenaNet has great taste in humor.

Path of Exile – Pay to Win

Path of Exile has earned a lot of its admiration from gamers for not only being free to play, but without all the nasty microtransactions that affect 99% of other games on the market.

Grinding Gear Games decided to use that as the foundation for its April Fools this year where it announced invasive “pay to win” microtransactions for the title. If it weren’t for being so ridiculous, and the spinning camera at the end, you’d almost think it’s real.

League of Legends – Infinite Mana and Energy

Riot Games is always on the hunt for imbalances in League of Legends; its competitive side is part of its appeal, after all. Today it delivered a joke that if true would completely break its game. A side of me kind of wants to see it happen just for the LOLS.

And as it turns out, it is real. There is a game mode called Ultra Rapid Fire that you can queue up for and play during the next week. Details regarding this insane April Fools turned real game mode can be seen in the video below.

SEGA – MEGAne Drive

Could SEGA be a competitor in the virtual reality market? If it wasn’t kidding about its MEGAne Drive, it would be.

Just look at this thing (below). It’s like having two Sega Genesis consoles strapped to your face. Given current trends Lady Gaga and Kanye West might be looking to cop a pair.
