Suarez’s four-month ban from football following his biting of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini has resulted in Barcelona believing they can acquire the striker for £50 million, a sum which is significantly less than Liverpool’s reported £70 million asking price.
Suarez has been dealt an uncharacteristically large ban from FIFA which spreads into both international and club football, with Barcelona hoping to snag the Liverpool man on the cheap as he’s not allowed to play a game until October. The striker may also be prohibited from taking part in training sessions
According to The Mirror, Barcelona had been planning to offer Liverpool £80 million for the 27-year-old, along with a player. Now the paper reports that Barcelona are significantly lowering their offer, though Liverpool are said to be still holding out for £70 million.
Uruguay will next face Colombia in the first stages of the World Cup knockout rounds this weekend. Speaking of Suarez’s ban, and Uruguay’s chances in advancing in the tournament, Uruguayan FA president Wilmar Valdez said: “I have seen more aggressive incidents recently. It is a severe punishment. I don’t know exactly which arguments they used but it is a tough punishment for Suarez.
“It feels like Uruguay have been thrown out of the World Cup. We all know what Suarez means to Uruguay and to football around the world – not having Suarez would be a loss to any team.”
