I must admit, the wait for Gran Turismo 5 was the most painful of any game in my entire life. It took more than five years to develop, and although I was happy with its driving model, it had some issues. Nonetheless, Gran Turismo 7 is not too far on the horizon, and there’s a chance we might be playing it during the next 12 months.
Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi recently spoke to Eurogamer at the Goodwood Festival, sharing information that makes it appear that Gran Turismo 7 isn’t too far off. He said:
We are working on the title. I don’t think it’ll make this year.
Previously, BBC’s Top Gear interviewed Yamauchi where he said in a “best case scenario” it would come out this year. Unfortunately, Gran Turismo games take a long time to make. The fact that he isn’t adamant about it not coming out this year makes it sound like we might not be waiting too much longer for the PS4’s first Gran Turismo game; 2015 seems very likely.

Standard cars were a huge point of controversy in Gran Turismo 5, and they were brought up during the interview. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that they’re going anywhere. Yamuchi shared:
I doubt that we’ll be throwing away the standard cars. Each car has its own fans. So I think we’ll hang on to the archive. In the meanwhile, some of those cars we may be able to make into Premium cars as they become available – but basically we’re more focussed on increasing the number of premium cars.
So, when you hear that there are thousands of cars in Gran Turismo 7, don’t get too excited. Polyphony Digital has no intention of getting rid of these outdated, and in my opinion useless, PlayStation 2 era cars. In Gran Turismo 5 they made up more than 80% of the car population. That might end up being the case once again.
The PS4’s 2015 line-up is already looking great with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Bloodborne, and The Order: 1886. Gran Turismo 7 would be a huge addition to its roster.
