Naughty Dog is Strongly Considering a The Last of Us 2

Many gamers have argued that The Last of Us was not only the best game of 2013, but one of the top 5 games of the last generation. As with any title as successful as Naughty Dog’s latest game, talks of a sequel have been brought up regularly. While it makes financial sense, Naughty Dog is on the fence about whether or not to pursue as The Last of Us 2.

Speaking to VideoGamer, Naughty Dog Community Strategist  Arne Meyer shared the team’s feelings about pursuing a The Last of Us sequel.

I think we always make a smart decision in that all of our games are self-contained stories so they don’t have to continue if we don’t want them to or if there’s no reason for them to continue. It really comes down to is there something interesting in this universe we’ve created that we want to continue to explore? Is it something that we can get the entire team passionate about? Is it something we can get the creative directors excited about and then we could continue it?

Unlike Uncharted and other AAA series which would receive sequels, The Last of Us provides closure during its ending sequence. There were no cliffhangars, and nothing that cries for another game in the series. It stood as its own complete experience.

Nonetheless, The Last of Us has performed extremely well, both on sales charts and critically. Game development, as with any industry, is ultimately about making money, and there’s a lot of cash to be earned from The Last of Us‘ IP.

If there were a sequel, what would you like to see? I think staying within the IP, but focusing on the experience of another group of people would be a good idea. They can have appearances by the cast of the original title, but viewing Joel and Ellie’s world from a different set of eyes could make a new game more unpredictable

Next week The Last of Us Remastered will debut on PS4. Although it’s a re-release of a game that’s only a year old, it’s one of the most anticipated games of the year. You can see 1080p screenshots of the game below.
