Leonard Cohen, who will turn 80 years old on September 21st, will release a new album just following the milestone, his reps recently announced.
The new project will be entitled Popular Problems and will be the artist’s 13th album.
According to the National Post, the news came during a Leonard Cohen fan event in Dublin, Ireland where literature was handed out that included the album release plans. The booklet forward, written by Jarkko Arjatsalo, stated that, “Leonard has worked hard on his next studio album of entirely new songs… He asked me to let you know that Popular Problems will be out at the end of September, shortly after his 80th birthday.” Artjatsalo also confirmed in an email to “Rolling Stone” that the news of the album comes “directly from Leonard,” adding that the singer has no plans to tour at this time. “We are now looking forward to a great new studio album,” Artjatsalo wrote.
Cohen, who is in the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, is also a Companion in the Order of Canada, which is the highest honour in the country.
Some sources are speculating that the album Popular Problems will be released on September 22nd.
