Angel Di Maria Takes the Iconic Number 7 Shirt, Formerly Worn by Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United’s new bank-busting signijng Angel Di Maria has been handed the iconic number 7 shirt, which was previously worn by Cristiano Ronaldo when he played at the Premier League club.

Di Maria was unveiled by Manchester United in a press conference this week (August 28th), and used his time with the press to discuss the pressures that come with wearing the famous shirt at Old Trafford.

The midfielder said: “I am aware of its importance. Cristiano Ronaldo spoke to me at Real Madrid and explained. I hope I can live up to it.”

Di Maria was signed by Man U’s new manager Louis van Gaal for a huge £59 million, but the 26-year-old insisted the figure doesn’t concern him, saying:  “It does not bother me that they’ve paid £60m. I come here to work and do the best I can for Manchester United.”

Following the press conference, Man U’s official Twitter account formally welcomed the new signing to the club:

Manager Louis van Gaal also inevitably fielded questions from the press regarding the club’s incredibly poor start to the season, saying: “We have no problem when the opponent has the ball…but our problem is when we have the ball and have to build up the play.”

Fans will certainly be hoping that Angel Di Maria is a sign of better things to come, as they continue their losing streak under their new manager.
